Overview of the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno

A primitive breed, the Podengo originated from the ancient dogs brought by the Phoenicians and Romans to the Iberian Peninsula in the Classic Antiquity. It adapted to the Portuguese terrain and climate, to become what is now known as the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno.

This healthy, long-lived primitive breed is known for its pyramidal head, erect ears, sickle shaped tail, well-proportioned, well-muscled, and sound construction and lively, intelligent, sober and rustic presence.

It has two varieties - smooth coat and wire coat.

With incredible sight, scent, and hearing, this dog is often referred to in Portugal as a "triple treat killer" for its prowess in rabbit hunting.

The Podengo Pequeno evolved morphologically from the 15th century, serving as ratters on the Caravels of the Portuguese discoverers, including Magellan and Vasco de Gama.

Today, this multi-faceted, intelligent, enchanting hound is a fine companion that excels in agility and lure coursing and serves as a therapy dog and in many other areas.

The first Podengo Pequenos were brought to the United States in early 2001 by Kip Bergstrom and Marilyn Piurek. The breed was fully recognized by the AKC on January 1, 2013.
