The ancient smooth coat Portuguese Podengo is the underpinning of the Pequeno family. It is difficult to find a good pure bred smooth coat Podengo Pequeno in the USA. Because of the indifference to cross breeding wire with smooth Podengos by AKC and some breeders, hybrids are produced that can be very strange looking. Also, should you get a smooth coat out of wires or with wires in its background, down the road you may well have litters of odd looking dogs, called "half-hairs" in Portugal and not registerable there.
The reality is that the smooth coat Podengo is an ancient breed that has stayed the same for centuries. The wire coat was "invented/reinvented" in the 1970-90's in Portugal, with influences of the Dachshund, MinPin, Cairn Terrier, Yorkie and small Medios introduced.
There are some fine smooth coat breeders listed with the Portuguese Podengo Club of America at www.podengos.com
We like our American-bred puppies best because getting a home grown pup means that you can go visit the breeder, talk with them on the phone, and keep in touch easily and economically. There are some fine smooth coat breeders in Portugal, but make sure the pedigrees of any puppy you may be interested in has a "clean" background of smooth coats only.
Our new links page will have American and global links.
