The following lists some of our favorite links regarding the small Podengo. We especially like information available on the website of the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America (PPPCA).
The USA has now produced more than twice as many puppies here as imports. So we are on our way! Just make sure you work with a good breeder, this is essential. High volume breeders can be problematic, so buyer beware!
This section lists Podengo Pequeno breeders in the United States, where the best breeding programs are connected to the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America (www.podengos.com), which has a good code of ethics meant to protect the Podengo from unscrupulous breeders and practices.
To be listed as a Pequeno breeder, it means that the breeder records all of their breeding stock with the AKC-FSS, registers their DNA with AKC, microchips or tattoos them for permanent identification, checks various health indicators and provides other reasonable means to ensure that the Podengos are healthy and are going to the best homes. Portugal and European Imports
Some of the Podengos shipped from Portugal do not have full pedigrees, which means they may not be pure Podengos. So if you are getting a Podengo from abroad, make sure you are getting a bona fide Podengo. Also make sure that the Podengo has a health certificate and has been checked for luxating patellas.
Also, it is very costly (up to $1200) to ship a dog from Portugal. And the great thing about buying a Podengo in the US is you can often get to see the puppy and talk extensively with the breeder!
Prices
Most imports cost more than home grown Podengos, sometimes twice as much when including shipping and other things. We list those breeders of the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno who have websites and who have so graciously offered their time and talents in helping us develop and protect the breed here in the United States. All USA breeders listed are members in good standing with the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America. Some of our favorite breeders do not have their own websites yet, but when they do you can be sure their links will be here.

Before you Buy - A Word of Caution
Before you purchase a Portuguese Podengo, make sure that you have a full three-generation pedigree for the dog. This is the documentation required to register your Podengo with AKC's Foundation Stock Service, ARBA (American Rare Breed Association), UKC (United Kennel Club) and other canine organizations.
In Portugal there is complex and lengthy process that allows for RI/incomplete registration dogs to participate in dog events until all conditions for registration are met. This process is native to Portugal and cannot be translated to other countries.
The best way to be an informed buyer is to join the PPPCA. You can download the membership form at www.podengos.com. This not only gives the potential Podengo owner access to significant valuable information, but also shows the PPCA and Podengo aficionados that the individual is committed to the breed. All reputable breeders in the United States are members of the Portuuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America and have signed the PPPCA Breeder Code of Ethics. Make sure the United States breeder you contact is a member in good standing with PPPCA. This may be verified by emailing podengosusa@aol.com.
Also make sure that the Podengo breeder has signed the PPPCA Breeder Code of Ethics. This code is consistent with good health requirements and better breeding regulations of the AKC.
