Porto Novo's Gustava GObama is the first small smooth coat Podengo bred and born in our home. We love the way you can see her lines, she is a beautiful girl with an outgoing personality. She started playing with the other Podengos in the living room when she was just 3 weeks old and is now welcoming to all people, anywhere, anytime!
At Porto Novo, we breed for temperament, health and beauty. Our puppies grow up with all ages of people and other Podengos, so they get a good start on being well socialized and very happy.

Temperament

Even though they love a good cuddle, Podengo Pequenos are not lap dogs, but are independent thinkers who are enchantingly intelligent and active. While Podengos are readily adaptable to new environments and not fussy about food, and shed very little and require little grooming other than regular combing and nail clipping, they need to be active. That means places to run free and wild, but carefully fenced in, as well as interesting things to do, like agility or a good game of catch. Obedience training is a must, and training on the recall is vital. While they enjoy watching the telly with you, it is not their passion.

Like all dogs, Podengos need to be carefully introduced to new places, people, children and other animals. Most American Podengos live happily in diverse homes, but that is because the Podengo world here in the US is a small community and conscientious breeders (like Porto Novo) advise people about the Podengo's temperaments and needs.

Looking for a Podengo Pequeno? Read this!

Some unethical breeders have been breeding indiscriminately and ending up with severe health problems. Make sure the breeder you see is a member of the PPPCA (Portuguese Podengo Peqeuno Club of America). This is the oldest and best club for the protection of the breed in the United States. Some other clubs may sound like PPPCA, given the fact that "PPP" stands for Portuguese Podengo Pequeno. But accept no imposters!

American-Bred Puppies

We like these the best! Getting a home grown pup means that you can go visit the breeder, talk with them on the phone, and keep in touch easily and economically. The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America (PPPCA) (www.podengos.com) has a breeder referral list that you can get via their website. Breeders on this list agree to certain AKC requirements and health checks, showing their honest commitment to the Podengo Pequeno. PPPCA breeders breed from the best and most diverse foundation stock to ensure good health and temperament.

Our puppies are from proven breeding lines from diverse foundation stock and are AKC recorded. They have great personalities and are healthy and sound.

So purchase your Podengo Pequeno from a breeder you can meet in person. Come and see the puppy you want!

Portugal and European Imports

Some of the Podengos shipped from Portugal and other countries do not have full pedigrees, which means they may not be pure Podengos. So if you are getting a Podengo Pequeno from abroad, make sure you are getting a bona fide Podengo. And make sure that the papers come with the puppy and are included in its price.

Prices

Most imports cost more than home grown Podengos. Some imports cost more than twice the US price when transportation, papers and other items are counted.

Links

The links part of this website lists mostly breeders in the United States, where the best breeding programs are connected to the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America (PPPCA), which has a nice code of ethics meant to protect the breed from unscrupulous breeders and practices. Also, the breeders that we work with avoid in-breeding, which can result in health problems in any breed.

If a US breeder is listed here, it means that the breeder records all of their breeding stock with the AKC-FSS, registers their DNA with AKC, microchips or tattoos them for permanent identification, checks various health indicators and provides other reasonable means to ensure that their puppies are healthy and are going to the best homes. So make sure that the breeder is a member of the PPPCA in good standing as is Porto Novo and all of our American partners listed on our links pages.
