History And Principles | | | | Caia, Marilyn, & Amalia | Porto Novo Podengos was established in 2001 in Newport, Rhode Island with the purpose of developing and breeding the highest quality purebred Portuguese Podengo Pequenos in accord with the breed standard endorsed by its mother country, Portugal. It's founder, Marilyn Piurek, brought the first purebred wire coat Podengo Pequeno to the United States from Portugal in early 2001. She campaigned this dog, Chicharro de Viamonte, to become the first Podengo ever to achieve champion status in the United States. Later, her Sericaia do Vale Negro became the first Podengo to ever win a Best in Show in the USA. Other Porto Novo Podengos followed this path to titles. Piurek organized and served as the first president of the Portuguese Podengo Club of America (2003-2007), which represented all three sizes of Podengos, setting the foundation for a strong and temperate presence in the United States. She is an advisor to the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America, which is the largest club of Podengo owners in the United States and the only one with a strong health standard and code of ethics.
Moving to Old Saybrook, Connecticut in 2004, Porto Novo continues to import, show, and breed only the finest representatives of the breed. Through the years we have established good relationships with Portuguese breeders of high repute and have learned from them during many trips to Portugal. We believe that the best way to develop our Podengos is in a nurturing home environment, so we keep our numbers small to give good attention to each Podengo and their individuality. We work closely with those breeders and future breeders here in the United States who share our vision, knowing that together we can develop the breed with respect and knowledge. As partners, we are committed to strategically planning and carrying out the best practices to protect and develop the small (Pequeno) Portuguese Podengo in America.
We respect the naturalness of the breed, which has led to its great good health and longevity. We understand its functionality, the way it is built, the manner in which its movement and attitude reflect its proper development. We seek a blend of good health, beauty and fine temperament. We promote sports, early socialization, and measures to keep our Podengos healthy, happy and active. We understand that each Podengo has a strongly unique character. As my husband is fond of saying, "Most dogs are like blended scotch. The Podengo is a single malt. Once you have acquired a taste for a single malt scotch, there is no going back to blended scotch."
We are part of the country's first "virtual kennel", made up of a team of partners who believe as we do - see more on our "Partners" page.
