Manny is America's first Podengo Champion and paved the way for the exhibition of Portuguese Podengos in the United States. He holds titles in the US with both ARBA and Rarities and also is the first Portuguese Podengo to become a champion in Canada. Manny is the proud father of CH Amalia da Casa de Maio, CH Basilio do Porto Novo, and grandpa of baby Donzela do Porto Novo and some of our Porto Novo puppies seen on these pages.
Manny is a great traveling companion and well behaved at meetings, restaurants, airports and hotels. He has traveled extensively in the US and has visited his homeland, Portugal. Some of his favorite places are New York, Washington and Newport because of the many outdoor restaurants where he can rest and watch the passersby on a nice day.
Manny now lives with our great friend Linda Buchanan on the street where my children grew up. He often visits his good friend Richard out in the country and comes to Old Saybrook frequently to visit and run and play. He is best friends with his half brother Bucky and they have great fun together. Manny has recently fallen in love with baby Gussie, our little smooth coat girl, and is a gentle giant of a friend to her. We LOVE this boy!

America's First Podengo Champion!
Chicharro de Viamonte "Manny" from Portugal
The Big Dog in a Little Package
In April 2001, Chicharro de Viamonte came to live in Newport, Rhode Island. The first purebred wirehair Portuguese Podengo Pequeno (PPP) in the United States, he was born in the Viamonte Kennel of Miguel Sabino in Leiria, Portugal on January 16, 2001. We had spent more than a year looking for a small Podengo. Nicknamed Manny, this great Podengo quickly became a fun-loving member of the household.
He is registered with the AKC Foundation Stock Service, the Kennel Club of Portugal and the American Rare Breed Association. At the age of nine months, Manny began participating in ARBA shows, both to show off his skills and have fun, and to educate the public about this special breed.
ARBA, Rarities and Canadian Champion
Manny won his American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) Championship after earning nine CAC-US (Certificate of Aptitude in the United States) points from six different judges. In January 2002, he was awarded ARBA's A1 Champion of Beauty title, given to the dog that is the first of its breed or variety of breed to receive a Championship title.
Manny earned his final points to become a Rarities champion at the Airport Classic Rarities Show in Bethany, Connecticut on July 19, 2003. He is the first Podengo Champion in the history of Rarities, Inc. Rarities is a Canada-based ancient and rare breed organization that sponsors dog shows in Canada and throughout the United States.
In July, 2006, Manny achieved his Canadian Championship at CFC shows in Karamouska, Quebec under F.C.I. judges from Europe. He is the first Portuguese Podengo to become a duly recorded Canadian champion.
Manny is the first and only Podengo in America to hold three Championship titles!
Manny is a happy dog whose favorite things are running through his wind tunnel and jumping up and swinging on the hammock. In the winter he is especially fond of the snow, the deeper, the better! Manny is especially happy when his best friend, Linda, takes him to the State Capitol to work on Senate legislation.
