Donzela do Porto Novo

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: A primitive type hound whose origin lies in dogs from Egypt and the Middle East brought by Phoenicians and Romans to the Iberian Peninsula in ancient times. The breed has developed over many centuries to be specifically suited to the rigors of the Portuguese climate and terrain, resulting in an exceptionally healthy, versatile, natural rabbit hunter able to flush rabbits from dense brush and rock crevices. The breed has an acute sense of smell, sharp vision, and keen hearing and uses all of these senses along with speed, agility and endurance in a unique hunting style. This small hound also served as a ratter on the ships of the Portuguese explorers, including Magellan and Vasco da Gama, from the 15th century on. It now excels in agility, lure coursing and other performance sports as well as therapy and companionship.

TEMPERAMENT/APTITUDE: Very lively and intelligent, independent and rustic. Natural rabbit hunters, either alone or in small packs, also used as watch dogs and companions.

GENERAL APPEARANCE: The head is wedge-shaped with prick ears. The body has no exaggerations in any of its proportions. Sound, well-muscled frame. The Pequeno has two coat varieties - Smooth Coat and Wire Coat.

SIZE and PROPORTION: Body length is slightly longer than the height at the withers. Height at the Withers: 8 to 12 inches. Weight: 9 to 13 lbs.
