Can anything be sweeter than our beautiful little smooth coat girl Podengo Happy and handsome, rugged little wire coat boy Money? Both from our kennel!

Happy i. am.
Our little baby Happy i. am. is named after the popular happy music.
She is smart, clever, loving and brilliant.

Hestia de Vedras and Bucky
These two very different Podengos - our 7 year old wire coat Bucky and our 4 year old smooth coat Izzy, are good friends. They have helped us convert the TV room to the Podengo room!

Donzela and Kip celebrated their February 27, 2014 birthday together. She is almost his age in dog years :)

Kip and Izzy
Kip showed off Izzy at Connecticut's AKC Meet the Breeds show in Hartford. Love the photo!

July 4, 2013
Had a great big party here. Loved how my little granddaughter Lilly was wearing a Podengo T-shirt. A bit oversized but very cute!

Happy New Year!
Believe it - there are five Podengos in this photo, 3 smooth and two wires. And they are all wishing you, with us, a very happy and healthy New Year!

At Stamford, CT August 2012
Just a few weeks until election day. Here I am with President Obama recently. He is a great person all around!
(Posted 10/20/2012 by admin)
Marilyn & CT Governor Dannel Malloy
Lots of politics and travel lately. Hosted a fundraiser for Obama in Stamford in early August and one at the PNH in Hartford for Sen John Fonfara later that month. Then 5 days in Charlotte, 3 in Washington and lots more.

The boy is doing well, growing up nicely! Won 4 Best of Winners last weekend, pretty good!
(Posted 9/14/2012 by admin)
Finally got to visit with my new little grandchild, Lilly Malaya Bauza. What a treat! She is growing up with her Dad's young Vizsla puppy but one day she too will have a Podengo!

Bucky has those interesting eyes.
We LOVE the Buckster!
(Posted 7/23/2012 by admin)
Baby Eats Dirt
Baby just keeps going after the moles in the lawn. Comes up with a lot of dirt and grass and sometimes a little critter. She is already an accomplished mouser and seems to have befriended a few small frogs.
These Podengos are indeed persistent!
(Posted 6/17/2012 by admin)
We call these three little smooth coat Podengos the Velcros because they always stick together. They are sister and brothers, each from different litters sired by the famous world winner Elvis El Rey de Vedras.
(Posted 4/21/2012 by admin)
I love it when our family comes to visit. My cousin Julie and friend Tim and her Podengo Dooze (AKA Saloio) spent Sunday here. Dooze helps Julie manage a big doggie daycare center in West Hartford. He is exceptionally personable and smart and sweet as can be!

Jack (AKC Afonzo el Rey) at a show in Hartford.
Next year the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno will be able to be shown in all AKC shows as the breed is entering the Hound Group on January 1, 2013. Meanwhile Jack & Brisa are going to local shows and Izzy is getting ready for her SA and Europe tour.
(Posted 2/19/2012 by admin)
Jack and Brisa snoozing while their people watch TV.
Going to be a good year! That's because these little Podengos are becoming so well trained and happy, can't help but smile with them :)
(Posted 1/28/2012 by admin)
Beautiful dogs, beautiful day!
Had ten Podengos here visiting, kind of crazy! Ours took a few days to settle down. Here are Jack and Izzy taking it easy.
(Posted 1/5/2012 by admin)
3 months and 5 lb -- a little sweetie for sure!
So Kip comes home from a brief vacation in Portugal with a delightful little girl, half sister to both Jack and Izzy, who he insists we must keep. How can you not when she leaps into your arms, tail wagging at high speed.
So now we have 4 smooth coats, who woudda thunk?!
(Posted 12/11/2011 by admin)
Bucky my Boy
Bucky loves to smile!
Got home from a good day in New Haven and there was Bucky, always my faithful boy. We had some delightful hugs and then all the other dogs jumped right in. Boy, they love to play!
(Posted 10/19/2011 by admin)
New Boy and Liz
Liz came from London to visit us a few days after Jack (Afonso El Rey) arrived from Portugal. You can see that they quickly and thoroughly bonded!
(Posted 9/15/2011 by admin)
Lots of Shows!
Kip with Hestia de Vedras after she won the PPPCA's 9th Annual National Specialty Show in Freehold, New Jersey. She also won an All-Breed show that day. Whew!
Been taking all of our Podengos to various shows -- ICKC, AKC, and all, kind of like alphabet soup!
Well, Izzy is now an ICKC Champion, along with Bucky and 3 of ours qualified for an AKC show by invitation, though unlikely to attend.
Here is Izzy earlier this month. Winning again.
(Posted 8/21/2011 by admin)
My Pal Bucky
I have to admit that Bucky is the most incredibly wonderful little Podengo in the world! With his ever-wagging tail and sweet alertness, he is a joy to all!
Here he is, taking a rest while I read. Probably wishing he could learn to read too:)

More Firsts for Porto Novo!
The judge presents the ribbon, the handler Billie holds Izzy, and Izzy gets serious!
Porto Novo campaigned America's first wire coat Podengo Pequeno to become America's first Podengo champion, the first wire coat to win Best in Show, and the first small smooth coat Podengo to win a Best in Show. Pretty great score card! But even better is the fact that they are wonderful, intelligent, fun-loving dogs.
We work with a network of breeders who are all PPPCA members. If you are looking for a puppy or adult, make sure you contact a certified PPPCA breeder. Anything else is just not the same!

Last night -- folk songs, parodies of folk songs, world music. A good gathering.
(Posted 10/10/2010 by admin)
Just back from 3 weeks in Europe, 2 of them aboard a wonderful cruise ship, the Queen Victoria. Liz and I booked a super penthouse suite and had a much deserved rest. See photos under travels on this website.
(Posted 8/24/2010 by admin)
There's Liz, second from right!
Liz and her group got to ring the bell for the opening of the New York Stock Exchange today. Sure she was thinking of her two little Podengos back in London!

It's nice having so many Podengos with such great family members, and many were here recently!

Manny & the Times
Good taste! He has his eye on my NY Times. Smart dog!
(Posted 4/21/2010 by admin)
Manny came and visited, stayed overnight, we got to have breakfast together. Here he is with some of the girls, they all adore him.
(Posted 4/21/2010 by admin)
Had a great get together with people and their little Podengos. Would be super if all dog people were so good natured!

Christmas at the White House
Just back from a long day in Washington and a wonderful holiday party at the White House -- with carolers and music and beautiful people. The President and Michelle really started the season for me, the spirit of Christmas was very much a part of this most beautiful place.
As I was coming into the White House, going through the halls to the banquet rooms, I saw Bo, the First Dog, running in from the side yard. He looked like he was smiling -- I know I was!
(Posted 12/15/2009 by admin)
Showing and competing with dogs is a sport that requires good teamwork. It is called "The Sport of Dogs" for a reason. This is something I have always advocated in the Podengo world. I think my sense of sportsmanship comes from being raised by a professional sportsman -- baseball player, coach, and much more. He added Podengos to his life in the last years, had a great 96!
This photo was taken in October 1947 of Joe DiMaggio's Major and Minor League All-Stars. Joe is first on the left on the bottom row and my father is second from the right in that row. His friends and team mates Bob Repass, Snuffy Stirnweiss, Milt Rosner, Fred Davi, Bob Sperry, Randy Gumpert, Jimmy Sheehan, Carl Furillo, and Red Sheehan are also in the photo.

Well, Dylan is now six. At least she did not dress up as a dog, though she sure loves the Podengos :)

Washington in October
Four full days in the nation's capitol. Took this photo coming out of he OEOB after an afternoon of meetings. Podengos now being called "the other Portuguese dog" despite my efforts to convince people it is the more popular (in Portugal) one. Portugal has 10 national dogs and the Podengo and the Water Dog are two of these.
(Posted 10/12/2009 by admin)
I love this photo!
The Portuguese Podengo is a National Dog of Portugal. So is the Portuguese Water Dog. This PWD is having fun with his new owner - President Obama!

Dylan & the Dolphin
Dylan was here at Easter, loving the Podengos and telling me all about her adventures in Mexico with a dolphin. Looks like fun!

Podengo Party Time!
Manny came to visit last night, and Manny, Bucky, Caia, Donzela, and Gustava all played well together, even ate their bowls of cod and kibble together. And little Gus is just the most sociable Podengo I have ever had, she kind of sets the tone for smiles all around.

The Presidential Inauguration
Five days in Washington without Podengos, very different. But a wonderful week, lots of events, parties, meetings and best of all, today's Inauguration. Lots of crying, mine included, so much happiness!

Having a new puppy to share with family and friends at Christmas is delightful. Went out to Newport, original homestead of the first wire that we brought to the United States in 2001.We celebrated with our first little smooth coat, seven weeks old, very social, lots of fun.
(Posted 12/25/2008 by admin)
First day of winter and a big snowstorm. Kip put on his snowshoes and cleared a track for the Podengos. They LOVE the snow. Funny, as they hate the rain. Here they are having fun early today. The wind is howling and ice sleet coming down now. It is picturesque, but friends in northern Massachusetts have been without power for more than a week when they had a huge storm. We have been fortunate.

l-r Manny, Bucky and Caitlin
Seven year old Manny and two year old Bucky are half brothers -- they share the same mother, Laranja do Vale Negro, a Portuguese Champion and very beautiful Podengo. Manny and Bucky get on very well and when Manny comes to visit, they play and run and have a good time. On Saturday, Caitlin, daughter of Manny's owner, came to visit and Bucky fell in LOVE with her. At first Manny was not sure what was happening, then he kind of shrugged his shoulders and went with it. What a generous guy that Manster is to share pretty Caitlin with his brother!

Winter & Other Stuff
Caia went into labor immediately after the election was called for Obama, so here she is with Porto Novo's Gustava GObama, born November 5th.
The hot tub is set at 102, the Podengos have their fleece throws on the sofas, the yards are raked, the wood stacked, the herbs harvested and New England winter has made an early appearance with some very cold weather. But it is sunny and the Podengos are all smiles, reminding us of how good life can be.
(Posted 11/23/2008 by admin)
Podengos for Obama!
No question that Obama is gaining in popularity. And Bucky really LOVES him! When he hears the name Obama, Bucky jumps on the couch ready to watch TV (he loved the debates). This is one very clever Podengo and tons of fun!
(Posted 10/11/2008 by admin)
Bucky is an Obama fan!
Many of our Podengos live in homes with people who are active in politics, including this one. Years ago, a Solidarity activist in Poland told me that "democracy is a never-ending process." Here in the USA, that is especially true as we all have the freedom to work on those things we believe in and make our democracy even better!

Donzela, Mar & Caia October 1, 2008
Big birthday today and the Podengos are happy. So am I!
(Posted 10/1/2008 by admin)
Manny and Bucky are half brothers - same mom, the beautiful Beca, also known as Laranja do Vale Negro. They have quite a time playing, here is a recent photo. That's Bucky acting like a piranha . . . .

Lure Coursing Practice
Porto Novo's pack chilling out at the practice - Schwartz, Bucky (really chillin!), Caia and Donzela.
We went to a lure coursing practice in a wonderful big field in Uncasville, CT today. Was great to watch the hounds -- Afghans, Whippets, Salukis, Pharoahs, Greyhounds, Ridgebacks, many others AND PODENGOS! The breed was aptly represented by Pequenos Cacau and Zaragata and even Donzela. Little 7 lb. Podengo hound Zaragata was one of the fastest and most determined on the field. Great day!
(Posted 8/10/2008 by admin)
Donzela do Porto Novo
I took 14 photographs of five different Podengos today and only one came out. It is Donzela, who clearly inherited her mom's photogenic gene. Isn't she lovely?

Bye Bye Baby
Francesca dozes in Newport's cool breezes
Yesterday we went out to Newport with Francesca's new owner, who is bringing her home to San Francisco. We are going to miss this wonderful little girl. Here she is resting under one of the Adirondack chairs on the lawns of the Inn at Castle Hill, where we went to watch the sailboats in the harbor. She seemed to enjoy the view too!

Family & Friends Picnic
Dad, Kaz, Marilyn & Xander
We had a great gathering here July 6th for a combination Independence Day and Dad's 93rd birthday celebration. We sang happy Birthday and Stolat! and had two cakes with baseball motif in honor of "Whitey". Everyone had so much fun! We had small and medium Podengos and all sizes of people.

The Dog Gene
My nephew's daughter, 15 month old Veronica Piurek, came to visit from Indiana yesterday and LOVED our Podengos. We were all happy that she has so clearly inherited the dog lover gene. She played with baby Francesca and Bucky and Cai-Cai and Schwartz and Donzela. It was a delightful day with lovely kids and canines!

Blonde biker girl Mali with her doggles on!
Mali is visiting for ten days from her home in Surry, Maine. She is just delightful! Arrived here last Thursday afternoon in the side compartment of a BMW motorcycle after a long trip with visits to friends along the way. She was happy and a bit tired. I am amazed at how well trained she is now, we go on some lovely walks together. This is the first time in about a dozen years that I have had pain-free walking -- last year's chemo put my Rheumatoid Arthritis into FULL remission. So Mali and I get about quite a bit now.
These Podengos are exceptionally charming and versatile, that's for sure!

Mama Donzela and her baby Frankie girl.
It has been so long since my last posting. Having a new baby Podengo will do that. Little Frankie, now 8 weeks old, is amazing, she has developed so fast. Her nose was all colored in black by 3 weeks, ears were up since about 2 weeks, she started running out in the yard with the Podengo pack at 5 weeks, was totally outdoor potty trained by 6 weeks. Perhaps because she is a singleton (only puppy) she has gotten more attention, whatever the reason, she is one smart and happy cookie!
(Posted 6/12/2008 by admin)
18 days old -- sleeping, nursing and roaming, coat starting to turn gold, beginning to sit and stand and make noise when she hears my voice
New Puppy Days
We have a lovely new puppy, a lovely fat little girl called Frankie. There is just about nothing as sweet as Podengo puppy cuddling. This is a great time of year to have puppies as the weather is warming up and by the time she can go outside, it will be sunny and mild. We're all looking forward to this!

l-r Cacau, Sue, Bucky
Been a while since we posted here, I have been so busy with the Podengos and traveling, mostly back and forth to London where my daughter and her lovely little Podengo Ginja live. But home now, in time go to some dog shows and visit with friends. Here is Bucky and his brother Cacau with Cacau's human mom Sue. All the boys had a great time running about in the big yard together.
(Posted 3/31/2008 by admin)
Ginja in London
Ginja has a neat little flap out to the garden, where she spends much of her time. She is no longer interested in squirrels as she has discovered the cats and the hound that live next door, on the other side of the century-old brick wall. There is also a small red fox that visits the garden regularly who she chases off with equal vigor.

Little Bela is now called Bella, pronounced the same and it still means beautiful, which she is. Here is Bella with one of her Ibizan Hound buddies at her home in Arkansas.

Puppies Go Home
Yesterday little Lali went home and today little Bela (formerly known as Lizzie) went to her new home. They both turned out to be beautiful puppies and I am looking forward to seeing how they perform in the show ring. The most important thing is that they are in homes with the kindest, nicest, most loving new owners. These little girls are so sweet and lively that it should be no time before they rule their new roosts!
Giving up a puppy like these is very difficult, but when it goes to a home that shares your love for the breed and your values, it is just right!

Manny & Mar at the dinner table
What a great day! First, Zangao came to visit with TK and Bob. Zangao and the Porto Novo pack ran about in the snow and had a great time! Having the three boys cavorting amicably together was nice - Bucky, Schwartz and Zangao ran in the snow and marked dozens of trees in a wild marking contest! The, later in the evening, my first Podengo, Manny came for dinner with Linda and Rchard. How delightful!
(Posted 12/16/2007 by admin)
Great temperament, great structure and movement, great coat, this is one fantastic Podengo! Zangao won the Best male Podengo at the last USA Podengo Specialty and he is truly one of the best boys in America!
(Posted 12/16/2007 by admin)
These puppies have had their ears up since the beginning and now look at what they're eating. They must be miniature adults!
(Posted 12/12/2007 by admin)
Wow! These little girls take up all my time! They are just too cute and it is fascinating to watch them grow so quickly. They are true Podengos already, investigating new things, loving people, happy and inquisitive.
(Posted 12/10/2007 by admin)
Dylan & Lali
Boy, you don't get much rest when there are new puppies! Regulating the room temperature for the first few weeks, making sure everything is shipshape, weighing them daily and keeping their journal, cleaning their x-pen and play areas, etc. But mostly, lying on the floor and playing with them. Little Dylan is helping out, at four years of age those dog loving genes are really showing, she never tires of being with the puppies and even naps with them!
(Posted 12/6/2007 by admin)
Lizzie (front) and Lali play like true Podengos!
Wow! I have been so busy with the holidays and a new puppy litter and visitors that my poor blog has gotten no attention! So here are little Elisabete and Eulalia do Porto Novo, our newest Podengos, born on November 3rd. Today they are 3 weeks old and are up and about. You can watch their progress on their puppy pages. Podengos are just soooooo interesting!

Donzela schmoozes with Leszek
Leszek & the Pack
The Podengos have made great friends with Leszek, who is painting the house when he is not playing with Podengos. A true dog lover, the Podengos sense this and await his arrival every day. of course, they love his son Bartek equally!
(Posted 10/4/2007 by admin)
Ramon a.k.a. "Chacho"
This is my son, Dylan's dad, also a dog lover. He likes the big huge ones, has a Rhodesian Ridgeback who is a wonderful boy. Runs backwards from the little Podengos though, is afraid of them. Very funny, they just want to play! This B&W photo was taken with his twin lens 1965 Rolleiflex.
(Posted 10/2/2007 by admin)
Dyl loves Podengos!
The Podengos are so excited, I just told them that Dylan (my granddaughter) is coming to visit. Hurrah! Here she is in her Podengo shirt playing in the dog's room in July.

Clockwide from top: Schwartz, Bucky, Donzela, Caia, Amalia
Painters and Podengos
The house is being painted and the Podengos have become great friends with the painters, Leszek and Bartek. We have a picnic lunch every day in the yard and Caia and Donzela are especially in love with Leszek and Bucky and Schwartz love Bartok. Amalia keeps an eye on all of them but seems to prefer Leszek, who has two fun-loving little Westies and is a real dog person. So now I leave the shutters open when they come so the Podengos can watch them all the time. They run from room to room following the progress of the painting. But then they get sleepy after so many hours of fun that they go onto their bed in their dog room and take a good nap!

Schwartz, the dog formerly known as Doce :)
I got such great news from my doctor at Yale Med last week that I renamed my dog after him. So the dog formerly known as Doce is now Schwartz. The name suits this spunky little Podengo, here he is enjoying a run today.
(Posted 9/25/2007 by admin)
New Podengo in OS!
Sweet and delicious -- that's our boy!
After downsizing our pack a few years ago, I thought we had hit the right number for easy Podengo living. But then I met Delico Doce do Vale Negro and he stole my heart. So he is as sweet and delicious as his name, which means just that in Portuguese.
Now we call him Schwartz. Long story. He likes it!
(Posted 9/12/2007 by admin)
The coyote looked like this one
Had my first coyote sighting this morning. Amalia, who is in season, was out in the yard running up and down alongside the fencing, barking and on high alert. As she ran, I saw beyond the fence that the reeds were parting, keeping time with her movement, and thought a raccoon must be running parallel to her. Soon enough, a large coyote (not a raccoon!) popped out of the tulles and ran onto our dock, sanding still and staring right at Amalia. When he heard me approach, he jumped off and ran away. Interesting, as I've been hearing that the coyotes are repopulating lands they were last seen in more than a century ago. Must have been those strong pheromones that Mali seems to emit during her heat cycle, she is such a character!

Bucky sez, "Gimme one of dem snacks!"
Took a ride over to Trader Joe's today for provisions and found some great organic dog snacks, bought a bunch. When I came in the house, four little Podengos circled me, big smiles on their faces. They were so happy to see me, but as I started unpacking the groceries, they got happier and happier and one of them did a somersault, another was walking on her hind legs, one was up on the counter stool and the other was like a jumping bean. They knew I had some treats and they sure got their share!

We Visit Dad
Bucky and I took a ride down to West Haven today and visited my father and stepmom. They are doing well and even at 93 my dad goes out regularly on speaking engagements and to sports events. Bucky came with me, and, after exploring the spaces, snuggled down in my father's office for a nice rest. Good boy Bucky!

Kip & Bucky
My First Show this Year!
On August 11th, I went to the Rarities Classic in Haddam, Connecticut, just 16 miles upriver from home. The day was sunny and balmy, the Connecticut River flowed in the background beyond the meadows, there were about 150 entries, it was an very nice environment and show. My little Bucky won Best Jr. Puppy in Show in two very competitive shows. I handled him in breed and in group and Kip handled him in show. This was the first time I was able to go on an outing this year and was the perfect one!
(Posted 8/22/2007 by admin)
Bob and Marilyn in 1986
This is not a Podengo. My little guy, Bob la Habra, was the inspiration for my Podengos. I had always had medium to large breed dogs -- Spaniels, Labs, and English Bulldogs. On a visit to California in 1986, I found Bob, a long hair Chihuahua mix, who lived another 13 years, often with heart and kidney problems. Bob was my first small dog and he went everywhere with me. When he passed on, I diligently searched for a healthy small breed that looked like him. And voila! I found the little wire hair Podengo, our heart's delight.

Dylan playing in the dog's room
Dylan & the Dog Gene
Four-year old Dylan has surely inherited the dog lover gene! She is visiting to see Auntie Liz and Uncle Bob and spend time with her Nana and Dziadek and her Podengo friends this weekend. Once when she was two, I found her in a crate with three pups, all happy and shrieking and laughing. That's when I was certain she had the gene.
(Posted 7/29/2007 by admin)
No question, whenever someone gets into our hammock, Podengos will follow. Here is our daughter's husband, Bob, visiting with Liz for the weekend from London, England. Bob and Liz have sweet little Podengo, Ginja de Viamonte, at home, who has befriended Bob's house-sitting Mum. Meanwhile, some of our Podengos are happily joining Bob in the hammock. Donzela do Porto Novo made it there first and Bucky is figuring out how to jump in while Caia is content on the nearby chair.

Bucky & Caia with Dimitri & Nancy
My blog's day one and the creators of this website are here in OS right now. Nancy Paris and Dimitri Rimsky are consulting with the Podengos to create the best web puppies blog universe. The Podengos LOVE them. Nancy and Dimitri are web monkeys (formerly known as artists). Podengos are like our humans, stuffed on lobster and pie and ice cream and dancing to Taj Mahal. Our Podengos are truly party animals!

I love this photo of President Obama and the "other" Portuguese Dog! The PWD is a well-protected dog with a dedicated parent dog club behind it, and it was a great choice for the White House.
